Stipend & Responsibilities

Each participating artist or student will receive an $100 honorarium upon completion of his or her mural design module.
Participants should follow the given format and requirements in preparing their images and submitting the final design before the due date.
Then each module mural design will be enlarged and printed on the fabric to the size of one square meter. After that, 24 individual digital mural modules will be joined together to form a 6 meters  high by 4 meters wide digital hybrid mural.
Also, each participant will be invited to participate in the digital mural workshop, guided mural tour, online discussion forum and attend the Creative Industries Festival Opening Ceremony in April 2012 at the Mall.

Project Objectives

This studio-based research project will bring artists and students together so that they can brainstorm and learn as a group while still being able to produce a section of a mural for which they are responsible. A hybrid hanging digitally printed mural would seem to be an ideal medium for showcasing Brunei’s emerging and established visual artists to the public.
This experience will help to prepare these artists and UBD students to contribute to the project and further promote their innovative ideas, knowledge and dedication to the cause of developing Brunei’s creative industries at an international level.
Visions of Brunei will be a collaborative multimedia art project involving as many as 24 talented artists and UBD art students. The final hybrid mural will consist of 24 modules digitally printed as a large-scale mural on fabric.
All of the digital art images that will be incorporated into the mural will be works of art that have been created using computer graphic technology. These art images may either be digital photographs or computer generated images that have been manipulated to achieve their final compositions.
The final dimensions of this digital hybrid mural will depend on the largest industrial printing capabilities that Brunei has to offer and the expected mural dimensions will be 6 meters high by 4 meters wide. The expected dimensions of each ndividual module mural will be one square meter.
There will be a 10-minute multimedia presentation of how this digital hybrid mural was designed and fabricated. This research project not only showcases potential creative talents in Brunei, but also by giving artists and students a chance to actualise their ideas, it helps to provide them with an important means for sharing their visions of Brunei’s cultural identity.
It is important for the participating creative talents and the public to become more engaged with and aware of the importance of artistic expression and its impact on cultural, economic, social and geographical issues that are part of the dynamics for the development of the creative industries in Brunei.
Through this studio-based research project, 24 creative talents will bring their new visions and perspectives together to create an energetic large digital hybrid mural. Visions of Brunei will provide a means for the general public to understand better the perceptual world of a diverse range of contemporary creative talents.
Furthermore, this pilot scheme project will help to open the door between the public and the visions of creative talents who are destined to become the backbone of Brunei’s creative industries.

Project Overview

Visions of Brunei is a studio-based visual arts research project culminating in a finished digital hybrid mural that can be easily transported and set up in a public space such as a mall for viewers to enjoy. By combining the formats of digital design, commercial billboard presentation and community fine arts-oriented mural production, this new type of digital hybrid mural offers a portable solution to site-specific murals where the viewers must go to the mural site to view the efforts of a single muralist or group of artists.

This pilot scheme provides a promising vehicle for introducing the artistic talents of Brunei’s visual artists and UBD art students because it explores such creative industry fields as large graphic design billboards and poster concepts with the industrial printing production methods associated with new digital media. Based on the use of such 2-dimensional design concepts as the traditional well-known “elements and principles of design”, artists and UBD students will be able to create their own contemporary images, which will be printed out digitally as a discrete module within a large-scale mural that will be hung for the public to enjoy during the proposed Creative Industries Festival in February 2012. This hybrid mural will be an important step towards familiarising the public with the new vision, energy and perspectives of Brunei’s emerging visual artists.
